LA Junket Blog, day three: I took a rest on Patrick Jane's couch
After two days of doing hotel-room bound interviews, I was relieved to take a little LA road-trip and visit the sets of “The Mentalist” and “The Big Bang Theory.”
The first interview of the day was with “The Mentalist” executive producers Bruno Heller and Chris Long, held on the set of the series, inside the CBI office. Bruno started the interview off by revealing a certain tidbit: we will in fact be seeing Red John for the first time in the season two finale, though no actor (or actress) has been confirmed to play the role yet.
As for the possibilities of a romantic relationship between Jane and Lisbon, the producer says he wants to “keep the questions open,” but does admit that the pair do “love each other on screen,” only in a fraternal way.
Following the interview, I had a chance to prowl around the CBI set, examining all the objects on all the investigators’ desks, like Lisbon’s autographed baseball, and the post-it notes stuck on Rigsby’s computer monitor. Then once I saw Patrick Jane’s brown leather couch, the one that he reclines on in every episode, I knew I myself had to stretch out on it. I did, and afterwards I somehow felt more insightful about the world.

Later that afternoon, I ended up on the set of “The Big Bang Theory,” where they record the show in front of a live audience. It wasn’t taping day unfortunately, but it was interesting to see how all the various rooms (so much smaller in person!) were lined up in a row, side by side.
Luckily, I was able to conduct my interviews on the living-room stage, where the attention to detail was fantastic, from the books, to the action figures, to even the little “Sheldon” login screen on the laptop on his desk.
And yes, when the cast members came through, including Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar, nobody sat in “the spot” on the couch -- yes, only Jim Parsons took Sheldon’s rightful place on the couch’s pillowed corner.
Because the geeks on “Big Bang Theory” are gadget nuts, I asked Johnny about who would get the first Apple iPad on the series, and he said that the answer was up to the folks at Apple, but he also wondered if any of the show’s characters are even “Mac” fans in the first place.
Later, Simon talked about how he had a life-long love of television and sitcoms, and never would have believed he would be on the same show as Johnny, whose “Roseanne” character Simon specifically identified with growing up.
Kaley told me about how she had previously turned down Maxim three times before appearing on the cover of the latest issue, and how she’s even been photographed reading the magazine in public.
The final interview of the day was with Jim, and he came across just as energetic and eccentric as his character in the series. He talked about his recent Emmy nomination, and how he was terrified at the prospect of winning and having to make a speech. While Jim doesn’t possess the same intellect as his character, I couldn’t help but feel I was talking to Sheldon the entire time: Jim seems to share almost all the same mannerisms in real life as he does with his on-screen persona.
I couldn't resist saying "Bazinga!" to Jim either. He reciprocated.

And before I knew it, the interviews were over and the junket had come to an end. I’ve had a lot of fun, and I’ve been star-struck far more than I’ve been in years, and I can’t wait to do it all over again next time! Stay tuned to CTV.ca as I roll out more exclusive interviews and features I’ve accumulated over the last three days. Thanks for reading!
