Before “V,” this Canadian actress played an extraterrestrial in the series “Smallville” as Kara Zor-El (a.k.a. Supergirl).  Vandervoort plays Lisa on “V,” as a visitor who uses her alluring looks to manipulate Tyler (Logan Huffman).

The actress says that while both characters may be out-of-this-world, she tells CTV.ca that she has a more thoughtful approach on “V."

“Supergirl was a completely different character.  With Lisa in ‘V,’ we really talked to the producers about how the Vs come across.  Do they know how to speak the language?  Do they know how to walk?  Is this all foreign to them?  And really how we were told and how we perform is that they are very well-educated in the human way,” says Vandervoort.

“They're good actors.  They can cry if they have to.  And that's how we manipulate.  But really it's just when she's on the ship, she's in her uniform, she's very put together, following orders, not really thinking for herself.  And she's a soldier.  But when she's off the ship, I kind of allow her to experience more, to take her in and surprise herself.”

CTV viewers may also remember Laura Vandervoort from her stint on “Instant Star.” “V” airs Tuesday nights on /A\, with full episodes available online at CTV.ca.

Born in Toronto, Vandervoort has also appeared on “CSI,” “The Dresden Files” and “Twice in a Lifetime.”

The actress says that she uses her fish out of water status as a Canuck working in Hollywood to enhance her performance on “V.”

“With Lisa, I think the only true thing I can relate to, because not only am I Canadian, but I'm still pretty new to the business and doing this stuff, that, like Lisa, I'm kind of thrown into a world, and I have to find my way.  I'm almost blind just figuring it out as I go,” says Vandervoort.

“She's following orders.  I'm following orders.  I'm doing a job.  But I'm feeling emotions, and I'm confused, and I'm trying to sort out how I feel about things, just like Lisa.  So we're both really new in our own worlds and trying to understand how we feel and not just listening to other people and doing what people expect.  You've got to do what's right for yourself.  When it comes to photographs or publicity, you have to stay true to who you are, or you're going to regret things.”

“V” also stars Elizabeth Mitchell, Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch, Lourdes Benedicto, Morena Baccarin and Scott Wolf.

“V” is a remake of the classic 1980s sci-fi series of the same name.
