Broadcast details released for 2009 Scotiabank Giller Prize

Toronto, ON (November 5, 2009) - CTV Inc. announced today its extensive multi-channel, multi-platform campaign in support of Canada's written word with The Scotiabank Giller Prize, featuring live broadcasts on BRAVO! and BookTelevision - and available live to the world on CTV.ca - next Tuesday, November 10 at 9 p.m. ET. Hosted by CTV's Seamus O'Regan, the literature celebration will also air across CTV and /A\ stations four times over the following four days (see chart below). Surrounding the Gala presentations and putting "The Giller Effect" into full force is CTV's family of channels and programs, which will support the event with unprecedented special coverage. Among the highlights are Paula Todd hosting ARTS & MINDS SPECIAL EDITION: THE GILLER WRITERS' CIRCLE on Bravo!, Jeanne Beker's look literature and its connection to fashion on FASHIONTELEVISION, CP24's one-on-one author interviews, CANADA AM's round-table discussion with the shortlisted authors, and ETALK's ongoing nightly coverage.

With worldwide exposure online and through multiple national telecasts here at home, Canadian authors have experienced what has been coined "The Giller Effect" - the significant spike in sales enjoyed by The Giller Prize's featured authors. Following last year's broadcasts viewed by 1.7 million Canadians on CTV and its family of channels*, Joseph Boyden's Through Black Spruce enjoyed a 560% increase in sales in the week following his Giller Prize win. In 2007, Elizabeth Hay's Late Nights on Air saw an incredible sales increase of 628% and in 2006, Vincent Lam's Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures had a sales spike of 464%** - all following hours of on-air and online support by the Prize's broadcast partner. And this year's finalists have already seen The Giller Effect in action, with an average volume increase of 941% in the first week after the shortlist was announced.

"This year, I think they've outdone themselves. Nearly every outlet in the CTV family is doing their part for the cause, dedicated to highlighting this celebration of Canadian literature. It's an enormous accomplishment".

Also announced today is the lineup of Presenters for Gala. They are:

• Joseph Boyden - last year's Giller Prize winner for his novel Through Black Spruce - will present Kim Echlin's The Disappeared. Boyden is a personal fan of Kim's novel, which tackles similar themes to his own work: fiction with a social message.
• FLASHPOINT star Hugh Dillon will present Colin McAdam's Fall. Having attended an all-boys school himself, the musician and television star connected with the book's dark, edgy world of teen angst and obsession set in a boarding school.
• Film actress, Rachelle Lefevre (Twilight), will present Anne Michaels' The Winter Vault. Lefevre recently starred in the film based on Michaels' first novel, Fugitive Pieces, and is starring in the upcoming film Barney's Version, based on the Mordecai Richler novel.
• Fellow author Wayne Johnston will present Linden MacIntyre's The Bishop's Man. Johnson, a two time Giller-nominee himself, has written about Newfoundland and the Catholic Church - two important themes in The Bishop's Man.
• Broadcaster and author Paula Todd will present Annabel Lyon's The Golden Mean. In hosting GILLER WRITERS' CIRCLE for Bravo!, Todd connected with Lyon's use of famous historical figures whom she brings to life in this novel. The Golden Mean looks at the balance between Science vs. Belief and art vs. theory - themes still relevant in today's headlines which Todd relates to viewers every week.

THE IN-BETWEEN WORLD OF MG VASSANJI

This one-hour documentary by filmmaker Robin Benger focuses on why Vassanji's novels keep winning prizes. Benger had been watching the 2003 Giller Prize broadcast the night M.G. Vassanji won his second Giller for The In-Between World of Vikram Lall¸ and was intrigued by how anti-hoopla the writer seemed to be and the fact that he, like Benger, was from Africa, and wrote about it - contributing to Canada's fascinating global literary community of writers of Asian and Islamic origin.

In Toronto, CP24 has extensive live coverage leading up to and including Giller night. The coverage includes CP24's airings of BRAVO! NEWS (see details above), with full pre-Giller news leading up to the big night.

About The Scotiabank Giller Prize

The Scotiabank Giller Prize awards $50,000 annually to the author of the best Canadian novel or short story collection published in English and $5,000 to each of the finalists. The Scotiabank Giller Prize is named in honour of the late literary journalist Doris Giller and was founded in 1994 by her husband, Toronto businessman Jack Rabinovitch.
