'The Mentalist' kicks off its second season with a little luck
Appearing in every film -- ever -- by Canadian director Jason Reitman, actor Jeff Witzke has gained a reputation as being a "lucky charm" of sorts.
During an interview with CTV.ca, Witzke recalls when Reitman, who has directed "Juno," "Thank You for Smoking" and the 2009 TIFF buzz flick "Up in the Air," told him "Jeff, you're going to be in every movie I make."
"I said 'Jason, I'm going to hold you to that,'" laughs Witzke.
Witzke appears as a guest star on the season two premiere of "The Mentalist," which airs Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 10 / 9C on CTV. Full episodes will be available online at CTV.ca.
According to the actor, when Reitman began making short films, he turned to his group of friends, which included Witzke, and asked him to appear in the production. In Reitman's next short, he wrote a part specifically for Witzke, and so on, leading up to the production of "Juno," which earned Reitman an Academy Award nomination.
In Reitman's "Up in the Air," Witzke makes another cameo appearance opposite the film's star, George Clooney.
"One of the script supervisors who often works with Jason, when she sees me on set, she says 'Ah the lucky charm is here!' I'll take that moniker," says the actor.
Some of that lucky charm must have worked its way to the set of "The Mentalist," as the day that Witzke showed up to film his scenes as a real estate agent, Simon Baker found out he was nominated for an Emmy.
"It was quite a bubbly, festive day. When I met him I said 'Hey, congratulations,' and he said 'Thank you, but I'm actually kind of focused, and I don't want that to go to my head right now, I've got a day's worth of work to do, and I don't want that to get in the way of the work,'" remembers Witzke. "I thought that was very cool... he's a very nice guy."
As he tells it, Witzke says he wasn't sure if he was even going to land his role on "The Mentalist" in the first place. When the actor went to audition for the role, he found out that the show was actually looking for a character described as "Female, 40-50, blonde, cougar."
"I had to call my agent and say, 'Are you sure I'm supposed to go in?' says Witzke.
"I got the part, so I'm going hunting for more '40-50, blonde cougar' roles! It seems to be working for me."
Witzke currently finished co-writing and co-starring in a new web series pilot called "House Hubands."
"The Mentalist," after premiering on Tuesday night, moves to Thursdays at 10/9C on CTV.
