Originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, Rodrigo Basutro Garcia has come a long way from his hometown to pursue his dream of becoming a hip-hop legend. It’s no wonder that Rodrigo couldn’t breathe when the judges told him he would be competing in SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE CANADA’s Top 22. “I couldn’t believe it, I was going crazy!,” said Rodrigo.

Starting at the age of 10, Rodrigo and his friends would socialize by break-dancing in local parks and then battle against each other. “As I got older, I started wanting more out of my dancing. Learning choreography and training became important to me in order to advance and grow,” said Rodrigo. Since then, the hip-hop dancer has trained at the Opus Art School in Guadalajara for seven years, where his main focus was urban dance and salsa.

Ever ready for the competition, Rodrigo hopes to work with his favourite Canadian choreographer, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE CANADA judge Luther Brown, saying “he is the icon of hip-hop. He doesn’t let it die!”

Rodrigo claims that his fashion style is “trendy and urban, I like a mix of both,” and likes to snowboard, surf, swim, play tennis, and hockey, and work out in his spare time. When asked how the competition has changed him, Rodrigo says that “it has opened my eyes to other dance styles and I now realize that technique is very important in training.”

Rodrigo believes his perseverance and energy have gotten him this far in the competition, but says his passion and drive to win will make him Canada’s Favourite Dancer.
