Denitsa Ikonomova grew up watching her older brother dance on stage, and it was because of him she started dancing herself. “I loved it so much that my mom put me in the same school the next day,” said Denitsa.

Originally from Bulgaria, she and her family moved to Canada, where she started at Arthur Murray Dance School in Montreal, and then continued with different professional ballroom trainers.

Denitsa had counted 10 girls who had already advanced to the Top 20, so she was shocked when her name was called. Denitsa was fooled by Jean Marc into thinking the judges were choosing a Top 20 instead of a Top 22.

When asked what style of dance she is most afraid to perform on the show, Denitsa stated contemporary “because of the intricate moves and because it requires you to be extremely flexible.” However, her plan is to never give up and show viewers her passion and determination for dance. “Even if I am not completely comfortable doing the other styles, I never let myself get discouraged, and keep pushing myself past my limits,” said Denitsa.

Denitsa has travelled around the world for ballroom championships, and now that she’s competing in SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE CANADA, her mental strength and drive is higher than she expected. “Dance has always been my passion,” she said.

This dedicated dancer is ready for the competition and is looking forward to the coming weeks when she can show her skills to her fellow competitors and the rest of Canada. Denitsa said her “love for dance, positive attitude and bubbly personality,” will take her all the way to becoming Canada’s Favourite Dancer.
