“Lost” has been a thrill ride of a series, with a deep and dense cast of many personalities. Here at CTV.ca, these were some of our favourite characters over the course of the show, and in particular, have been deemed the most “cool.”
The series finale of "Lost" airs Sunday, May 23 on CTV, with full episodes available online at CTV.ca
5. Aldo
When viewers first met Aldo in season three, he was guarding the Dharma barracks while reading “A Brief History of Time.” While the producers of “Lost” implied that he died alongside several other “tent explosions” in the season three finale, they changed their mind and said he was rendered unconscious by the blast, not killed. Instead, Aldo came back for a swan song-like appearance in season six, leading Kate into the jungle and making endlessly sarcastic complaints before he was shot and killed for good by psycho Claire. Why did the producers bring Aldo back? What changed? Well since his very minor appearance in season three, actor Rob McElhenney became well known as one of the creators, producer and star of the hilarious sitcom “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” playing “Mac.” The cool thing about Aldo, at least the second time around, is that in my opinion, it isn’t really Aldo at all, but a bizzaro-world Mac trapped on the island, as a weird crossover dreamt up by “Lost” producer (and “Sunny” fan) Damon Lindelof.
4. Bernard
OK, while Bernard may not have the coolest of professions as a dentist, he has done some pretty cool things. He lived a swinging bachelor lifestyle for 56 years, and when he finally fell in love with Rose, married her despite knowing she had terminal cancer. Bernard is also a pretty lucky guy: when the tail section of the plane crashed, he remained strapped into his seat, which landed safely in a tree. He also was one of the few “contributors” to the Lostie camp, building an SOS sign on the beach out of rocks, proved his impressive marksman abilities with a rifle, and his own knowledge of morse code. Bernard’s transformation into “cool” status was complete, when following the flash time travel to the 1970s, elected to live in a cabin in the woods with Rose and Vincent, and grew out his beard and his hair… kind of looking like Sawyer.
3. Pierre Chang
Astrophysicist Pierre Chang first appeared on “Lost” via the weathered and spliced “Dharma” video in season two. During his time with Dharma, he made amazing threats, like telling Hurley he might have to weigh polar bear dung on Hydra Island, illustrated his love of Willie Nelson (listening to “Shotgun Willie” while giving baby Miles a bottle), and was surprisingly responsive to the truth that his son & company had travelled to the 1970s from the future. Not only did Pierre foster a love of turtlenecks, but as illustrated by the various Dharma training videos, loved a good pseudonym. Lately Pierre has even turned into a mini online phenomenon, ever since he began hosting the online “Lost Untangled” series alongside a puppet version of himself. However, on the series, the puppet calls Pierre the doppelganger. Overall, it’s Pierre’s intelligence, his charismatic on-screen personality, and his no-nonsense attitude which wins this “cool” honour.
2. Vincent
First of all, Vincent gets points for being a dog: specifically a dog that survived a plane crash. Does that normally happen? I don’t think so. Since the crash, he’s simply been hanging out on the island, presumably having a pile of good times exploring the jungle and splashing in rivers and such. He also is a pretty important character, as was revealed in one of the “Lost” mobisodes, that immediately following the crash, he was the first character Christian Shephard (who we now know is Smokey/MIB) talked to on the island. Even after his owners Michael and Walt left the island, Vincent stayed behind and became the unofficial Lostie mascot. He even proved to be somewhat of a helper, leading Charlie to a stash of heroin (which Charlie threw in the ocean), and the bone from a human arm, which lead Hurley to the Dharma van, and even tried to “save” Nikki and Paulo by pulling their blanket off of them before they were buried. Even the producers love Vincent so much, that they’ve guaranteed that he’s the only character who will survive through the series finale of “Lost.”
1. Frank Lapidus
Frank is master of the one-liners, and a welcome comic relief in the final seasons of the show. Not only that, he is played by one of the most interesting “cult” actors today, Jeff Fahey: For example, before he starred in “The Lawnmower Man,” the actor previously enjoyed a career as a successful ballet dancer. But getting back to Lapidus, he was awesome because of his fashion sensibility: he had a profound love of grizzly facial hair, Hawaiian floral shirts, and plenty of exposed chest hair. Word is that this character began with one of the producers of “Lost,” Edward Kitsis, and his unabashed love of the name “Lapidus,” who supposedly worked the named in the “Expose” script, and later insisted on naming the helicopter pilot the same name. I assume that between the love of the name “Lapidus,” and presumably a later infatuation with the actor Fahey, this character has survived much, much longer than he was ever intended to, simply because, besides Sawyer, he is the coolest guy on “Lost.”
