It appears that Kate Middleton has led a squeaky-clean life with a path that led right down the straight and narrow: is it too good to be true?

While I was mindlessly flipping through a random issue of some commemorative “Royal Wedding” magazines on my desk this morning, I noticed the repeated images of Kate’s cunning smile, her voluminous flowing brown hair, and sophisticated sense of style, and two words sprang to mind: Blair Waldorf.

For those of you out there who are completely unfamiliar with the “Gossip Girl” phenomena, let me bring you up to speed: A bestselling book series was turned into a primetime teen-soap drama, which follows the lives of wealthy young adults in New York City’s posh Upper East Side. It’s all narrated by a mysterious blogger known as “Gossip Girl,” who is never seen.

At the centre of the series are two main characters: Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) and Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester). Serena is the beautiful blonde “It Girl” who everyone loves and has a warm, gentle disposition that sometimes gets her into trouble. On the flip side of that is Blair Waldorf, the scheming dark-haired queen bee who is always plotting for more control over her peers, and will do almost anything to get it.

Now how could I possibly think that darling Kate Middleton is anything like Blair?

Well, I was thinking that if Blair truly existed, and was transplanted to the heart of upper class life in Blighty, wouldn’t she at least appear to be somewhat similar to Kate?

I’m sure in the tabloids Blair’s dark secrets would still be secrets, and the public perception of her would be gauged by the quality of her fashion (pristine) and her taste in men (OK, not so great). Blair would always have a smile on her face at photo ops, maybe scowl a bit at paparazzo outside her house, and party it up in the most exclusive charity fundraiser balls.

Sounds a little like the public face we know of Kate Middleton, right?

After all, this is a woman that somehow managed to get close to the future king Prince William while they attended university together, stave off a legion of “Serena” wannabes trying to lure William away, eventually winning his hand after a brief period of will-they-or-won’t-they-drama. Sounds like it could very well be a “Gossip Girl” episode right there, all you would need is a bunch of sycophantic girls at Kate’s side (um, Pippa?), to-die-for accessories (Engagement ring, natch) and a oddball past-their-prime band to perform an acoustic track in a ballroom (how about The Verve?)!

But who am I kidding, the more I learn about the “fairytale” romance of Will and Kate and the wonderful person Ms. Middleton is, I can’t help but shake the feeling that deep down she’s probably a Serena at heart.
