“Sometimes the most difficult decisions we make are about love and friendship, about doing what we think is best,” Sgt. Greg Parker (Enrico Colantoni) says during Tuesday night’s finale of "Flashpoint."

It’s a quote that’s fitting in the moment, but it also encompasses season four in its entirety.

“The theme of family and togetherness and how you keep the family together has permeated the entire season,” says Sergio Di Zio, who plays Spike, the team’s tactical tech expert. “We all had to wonder if the family would stay together this year.”

The season started with psychologist Dr. Toth (Victor Garber) poking holes in the team. “After the holes start, comes the self-doubt, especially for Parker,” Di Zio says. “He’s been going through a lot and this (episode) is the culmination of that.”

The entire episode is precarious, with Parker unsure of his decision to stay on as leader, or give into his self-doubt and abandon the SRU, breaking up the team.

“That uncertainty that pervades the whole episode was where we all were at,” Di Zio notes. “It was pretty hush hush until we shot it and then there were rewrites and things were changing all the time and we weren’t sure what was going to happen.

“It was an emotional episode to shoot.”

If Team One seems close on camera, Di Zio says they’re just as close when the cameras aren’t rolling. “We care about each other a lot and as much as we acted that way the first year, now it’s in our bones.

“When you first meet somebody, you give them your best self, and the more you get to know them, they get to see the rest of you and the love gets deeper when you start accepting the stuff that isn’t the best self. We got to get there together, as a group.”

It’s been a rollercoaster of a season, with nearly every single member of the team in peril at one point or another, and the final episode is definitely emotional. “It’s the last scene, the last five to ten minutes for me,” Di Zio says.

“You look around and it’s all there. It’s kind of lovely – this tribute to what’s been formed there with all of us.”

The "Flashpoint" Season 4 finale airs on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 8/7C on CTV.
