After becoming Canada's most popular sitcom on CTV, "Corner Gas" is now invading homes south of the border.

American broadcaster WGN picked up the show earlier this year and will be airing it weeknights after "Scrubs."

The premise of "Corner Gas" is simple - Brent Leroy (Brent Butt) operating a gas station in the Prairies, dropping wry observations on his family and friends. When the show returns for its fifth season on CTV this Monday, Brent decides that there's not enough local programming and decides to help.

New praise for the series has been rolling in, and U.S. critics are comparing the series to classic comedies such as "Northern Exposure" and "Seinfeld."

Tara Spencer-Nairn, who plays police officer Karen Pelly on the show, told CTV.ca that the early buzz hasn't changed much on set.

"We're the same goofy people just out to have a good time. It's hard work, but it's still fun," the actress said.

Spencer-Nairn chatted with CTV.ca about the show's six Gemini nominations, her rebellious teenage years and her upcoming wedding.

Congratulations on your Gemini noms! What would you say your chances are like this year?

I don't know. The cast has been nominated before, and we're zero for three. Maybe this is our year.

It's great that the awards show is to be in Regina. For once we can celebrate with our crew, and that's going to be really cool.

The crew has become part of our family. We've been with them for five years and it's because of them the show exists.

What are your thoughts on the show airing in the U.S.?

I think it's so exciting. The States haven't had any huge original comedies recently, and I'm glad they sold the show there. It'll be interesting how Americans react.

The reviews have been really good. Anytime you work hard on something like this, it's nice to hear good things.

You've almost exclusively worked in Canada on homegrown films and shows. Will newfound U.S. recognition of "Gas" entice you to pursue more roles south of the border?

I just want to work, and I want to work on good projects. If that means the U.S.? Great. If that means staying in Canada, that's fine too. It doesn't matter to me where I am.

When you were younger, you were kicked out of private school for rebellious behaviour... Do you think it's ironic now that you've found success playing a straight-laced cop?

Well, it was this all-girls private school in Vancouver, and safe to say, it wasn't my style. I had issues with a few teachers, who I would constantly tell off. I also kicked some holes in the walls and spat in the headmaster's coffee.

And now you're pretty well known for playing a cop.

Oh, the irony is not lost on me. I would have voted most likely to be in the back of a police car, not in the front of one.

So what's in store this season on "Corner Gas" for Karen?

It's pretty much the same. That's what I love about the show. It's a whole lot of nothing. And somehow there's humour in that, and it works. Not a lot changes, but it's hilarious.

Any hints for the upcoming season?

Honestly, we shoot so fast that the whole thing goes by in a blur. I'm trying to think of something now, and I'm drawing a blank! We shoot two episodes in eight days, which is really quick.

I heard you were in Toronto for the film festival.

I was! We're always filming while it's on, and this year I finally said "I just want to go, I miss it so much!" I hit up a couple events and then I was home... I didn't even get a chance to see a movie!

Any future projects in the works?

Well, I've been planning my wedding.

Congrats! When's the big date? Who's the lucky guy?

Thank you! It's in April, in Toronto. I'm marrying Josh Glover, who is a publicist with McClelland and Stewart.

Is your wedding going to have a "Corner Gas" theme?

Oh no, but there might be mini-burgers later on in the evening! Maybe chili cheese dogs!
