Roman Danylo returns to 'Comedy Now!'
It’s been over ten years since his previous performance, and this comic has come a long way.
Viewers may best remember Roman Danylo for starring on the CTV show “Comedy Inc.” for five years, a stint that included impressions of David Caruso and characters like “Vlad, the Russian Romantic.”
His work on that program earned Danylo a Gemini nomination.
The Calgary native jokingly tells CTV.ca that the reason it’s been ten years between appearances on “Comedy Now!” is that it took him a decade to come up with new material.
“It’s great to do these shows, because there’s not any other show that you can do a taping and log an hour of material,” says the comic. “It’s usually five or ten minute bits. In a way it’s like taking that material and getting it all down, permanent somewhere, so you can look back at it and have a reference.”
Compared to the first time around, Danylo says he’s now “far less energetic.” But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
“I looked back at the first one, and I was very perky. I’m much less perky in this one. There’s a little more conservation of energy, and a little more focused, and more experienced,” he says.
“The first one, I think about it, and that was very early on in my career. I don’t know how I talked them into letting me do it,” he says. “I was in over my head, doing it the first time. I was scrounging to put together an hour in 1998, and I had only been doing standup a few years. That was a bit of work!”
Because so much of the behind-the-scenes crew on “Comedy Now!” worked with Danylo on “Comedy Inc.,” he says the experience of working with them all again is “like coming home.”
Since “Comedy Inc.” closed up shop in 2007, Danylo has become a road warrior, saying that one of his missions is to put on shows in as many “soft seat” theatres as possible, an objective born out of his distaste for lousy gigs that comics often face.
“I’ve done shows where they had no sound system, no lighting. I did show where instead of lighting, they just turned up the heat lamps on the buffet,” says Danylo. “This happens all the time.”
As for up-and-coming young comics, Danylo offers up this bit of advice: “Always bite off more you can chew. It’s a good motivator. If you don’t feel like you’re ready, do it anyways.”
“Comedy Now!” airs Saturday nights on CTV, with full episodes available online at CTV.ca.
