Ren says she would've quit 'ANTM' if she hadn't been eliminated
Ren Vokes isn’t upset she was kicked off “America’s Next Top Model.”
In fact, the 22-year-old from Grand Prairie, TX, says she was going to quit anyway.
“It was a crazy, crazy experience that I had. It just wasn’t fun for me after a while so it was good to go,” says Ren, over the phone from Los Angeles.
Ren was the next contestant to be eliminated after the judges thought her most recent photo was “a mess” and knew her ambivalence about being there was contributing to her performance.
It was no secret Ren wanted to leave, describing the house where the contestants lived as “the most hostile environment she’s ever been put into” and telling the other girls she wanted to go home.
During the judging panel Ren told the judges she didn’t like the drama in the house and when asked by host Tyra Banks what she wanted, she said she wanted to stay. Later when she fell into the bottom two, Ren admitted to Tyra she was only staying in the competition because her mom loves the show and it would be a way to get her mom to finally like her. Ren had told the girls earlier in the episode she and her mom don’t get along and Ren thought she favoured her “all-American” brother over her.
Tyra said she admired Ren’s honesty and then revealed it was Brenda who would be staying, anyway.
“I was completely done,” says Ren, who adds she has no regrets about what she might have given up.
“I feel like I’ve gotten good exposure already. It is a good show to be on to get the experience and whatnot, but I feel like I can do (modeling) without it and if I can’t, then it’s not meant to be.”
Ren’s conflicted emotions about being there certainly had an effect on her photos, including her most recent one where she had to embody a disco dancer. The judges criticized her for only doing four poses, but Ren says the instructions they received were contradictory.
“Before the shoot they said you need to portray the dance moves as much as possible … (but) at panel they said it needs to be more model-y.”
Ren was brought in as a late addition to ANTM in New York City after the other contestants were chosen in L.A.
Tyra told the other girls she had been “hand picked” and Ren says it may have contributed to them treating her differently at first. Even though they eventually warmed up to her, she just couldn’t handle everything else that was going on.
“I think it was a mixture between the other girls (and) all the freedom that I had lost,” says Ren.
She says even though she was excited about joining the show once she got cast, her heart just wasn’t into it once she got there.
“I (thought it) was pretty cool … it was just once I got out there it started to be less and less cool,” says Ren. “I guess I don’t really feel the reality TV side of it.”
She was also surprised by how much time they did spend in the house, compared to the time spent doing challenges and photo shoots.
Ren is now back in Los Angeles, enjoying her freedom. She says her mom was disappointed that she got eliminated and thought she could’ve won if she had stayed and really gave it her all.
But Ren’s mom may have other things to look forward to.
“I’m still going to try and pursue modeling. I’m just going to do it without being trapped in the house with a bunch of girls.”
