Lulu thought her ‘America’s Next Top Model’ elimination was a joke
According to the latest evictee from the competition, the native of Brooklyn, New York, she had no idea she was going home.
19-year-old Lulu Braithwaite struggled in last week’s final photo challenge, where the models had to try and appear taller by using various props. After seeing the final picture, the judges sent her packing.
This cycle of “America’s Next Top Model,” host Tyra Banks has selected only petit models in order to give them a chance in the modeling world. The winner will receive a management and representation deal with Wilhelmina Models, a $100,00 contract with CoverGirl and a cover shoot for Seventeen Magazine.
CTV.ca talked to the eliminated model about her time on the show.
I’m sorry to see you go, Lulu! What was going through your mind when you were eliminated?
Truthfully, I thought it was a joke. It was a surreal experience to begin with so I was totally in shock.
Who did you think was going home?
I’m not sure, I don’t really think of anyone but myself when we’re at panel. When I looked around and it was me and Britney, I was like, okay, I guess I’m in the bottom two.
What did you enjoy about being on the show?
Meeting all the people and working with photographers, just to have that experience under my belt now, you know?
In the house there was lots of drama. Who would you say you were closest to in the house?
I had a few of them that wasn’t actually seen on the show, but Jen and I were close, Rae and I, Ashley and Courtney.
Did you ever find it strange watching yourself on TV?
I hated watching myself on television actually. It was such an awkward feeling, I don’t know, I didn’t want to watch it. The first show I fell asleep, because I didn’t want to have to watch it with my family. The second show I watched by myself, and then I watched the last episode with my girlfriends.
Were you flooded with text messages the day after you were eliminated?
Oh man, during the show, the next day, the day after that, I wondered when they were going to stop!
What advice would you give to girls thinking about getting into modeling?
Be focused. If that’s what you want to do, then you have to be focused. You can’t be second guessing yourself. Go for it.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
I have to say from my mother, even though we don’t get along that well, she told me to do whatever I want. The sky is the limit.
Up here in Canada, Jay Manuel is the host of “Canada’s Next Top Model.” What did you think of him?
I loved Jay. He is just as outspoken as Miss J, but nicer! He’s good at giving advice and making you understand what he’s saying. It’s both intimidating and helpful.
What was it like meeting Tyra?
When I met her, I felt like I was still watching her on the show, like from my living room. She looks perfect, like a hologram. But Tyra is also a pretty random person, and if you try to question what she’s doing, you could be sitting there for months.
Like Super Smize?
Oh yeah, see I’m actually shocked that she’s now coming out with the Super Smize superhero. She’s been talking about smizing for years. I was like, this is such a Tyra thing to do, and I’m surprised that she didn’t do it before.
Is there anything that viewers didn’t see that you wish they did on the show?
I wished they showed more of the house events, the girls had a lot of fun there. Bianca and I, even though we weren’t the best of friends, had this Tina Turner routine thing in the pool one night, like random things like that. Girls hanging out, laughing. That was my favourite time on the show.
